For macOS and Windows

Say it.
It's written.

Hold a key, speak, let go. Velo turns your voice into clean text and pastes it at your cursor. In your mail, your editor, your chat, anywhere you can type.

Free, no account needed. Works offline too, on your own computer.

How it works

Three steps, and the third one isn't yours.

  1. 1

    Hold the key down

An overlay appears at the bottom of your screen. Your current app stays active, the overlay never steals your focus. Your cursor stays exactly where it was.

  2. 2

    Just talk

Stumble, repeat yourself, correct yourself out loud. That's allowed. "No wait, make that Tuesday" simply becomes Tuesday.

  3. 3

    Let go

Whisper transcribes, a language model drops the filler words and sets the punctuation. The clean text is at your cursor before your hand is back on the keyboard.

A dictionary that fills itself

Names, jargon and brands that speech recognition mishears by default end up in your own dictionary. And you don't have to put them there yourself: correct a word after Velo pastes it and it remembers the pair. Even if you type around it first or step away for a moment. Next time it comes out right.

The terms travel along inside the same transcription request, so it costs no extra millisecond. Speed is the entire point, and a dictionary is not going to eat into that. Sign in and your dictionary follows you to your other Mac.

Nothing goes missing

You pasted into the wrong window. Or you typed straight over it, and you had put it rather well. Velo keeps every dictation, so you simply take it back: copy it, or paste it at your cursor after all. Searching works too, including what you said last week.

Your history lives on your Mac only. No server, no account, no sync. And you decide how long it stays, from keeping nothing to keeping everything.

14:02 Thanks for forwarding that. I'll work through the comments and send a new version by tomorrow afternoon.
11:47 Summary of the meeting: the budget is approved, delivery moves back by a week, and communication now runs through the project team.
09:15 Note in the minutes that we decide on the new supplier next week.

Works without internet too

On a plane, on the train, or simply because you want your voice to stay on your own machine: set Velo to "On this Mac" and transcription runs fully on-device, on a compact build of the same Whisper model the cloud uses. One 574 MB download, and after that it needs nothing at all.

Local dictation is free and unlimited, no account needed. And once the model is on your Mac, it doubles as your safety net: if your connection drops while you're dictating through the cloud, your Mac finishes the dictation itself instead of losing it.

No sign-up wall

You can dictate the first time you open it. No account, no credit card, no email verification. Velo has to prove itself in ten seconds, and a form has no business standing in front of that.

Menu bar, Dock, or both

Want it out of sight in the menu bar? Fine. Prefer a normal app icon in your Dock? Also fine. You switch between them without restarting the app.

Signed by Apple

Developer ID signature and notarization from Apple. No right-click-to-open-anyway, no warning about an unidentified developer. It just opens.

Built for speed

Native Rust, no Electron shell. The microphone stream only opens while you use it and closes itself again. The local speech model is a separate download, only if you want it.

Privacy

What you say stays yours.

Dictating means saying out loud what you would otherwise type. Often that is exactly the kind of thing that shouldn't be left sitting somewhere.

  • Rather skip servers entirely? Set Velo to "On this Mac": transcription then runs locally and your audio never leaves your Mac.
  • When you dictate through the cloud, audio is processed to transcribe it and thrown away afterwards. No recording ends up on a server.
  • What you dictate lands on no server at all and is never logged. Not even "for quality purposes".
  • Your history stays on your Mac and belongs to no account. How long it is kept is your call, and off is one of the options.
  • The watching that lets the dictionary learn happens locally on your Mac, and that text never leaves your device.
  • Your dictionary only syncs when you are signed in, and then only to your own account.
  • Your API key sits in the macOS Keychain, not in a config file.

Questions

Good to know.

Does it work on an Intel Mac?

Not yet. This build is for Apple Silicon only, so M1 through M4. On an Intel Mac it won't start.

Which permissions does Velo ask for?

Microphone, to hear you. And Accessibility, because that is the only way macOS lets an app paste text at your cursor. macOS asks for both itself the first time.

Which languages does it work in?

Whisper recognizes more than ninety languages, and English and Dutch both go excellently. Switch language halfway through a sentence and it usually follows along without being told.

Does it work in every app?

In anything with a normal text field: Mail, Slack, Notion, VS Code, Safari, Messages, Word. Velo pastes exactly where your cursor is and then puts your clipboard back the way it was.

Do I need an internet connection?

Not necessarily. By default Velo dictates through the cloud, because that is fastest. But download the local model in Settings (one-time, 574 MB) and dictation works fully offline, with Velo switching over to your own Mac by itself if the connection drops.

What's the difference between cloud and "On this Mac"?

The cloud is fastest and runs AI cleanup afterwards: filler words removed, clean formatting, and commands via the command key ("translate this to Dutch"). On this Mac is free, unlimited and private: a compact build of the same Whisper model, running on your own chip. You get what you said, neatly punctuated, and your audio never leaves your Mac.

Where does the name come from?

From veloce, fast. Talking is a good three times quicker than typing, and that difference is the whole idea.

You could keep typing for the rest of your life.
Or not.
