Privacy policy

The short answer

What you dictate is processed to turn it into text and then thrown away. No recording is kept on a server, your transcripts are not stored or logged, and nothing of yours is used to train models. The rest of this page explains what is recorded.

Who is responsible

What is processed

• Audio. Your recording goes to speech recognition to be turned into text and is not kept afterwards. No audio file is stored, not on your Mac and not with us.
• The text from your dictation. It passes once through a language model to clean up punctuation and false starts, and is not stored or logged afterwards.
• Your history. It stays local on your Mac. You decide in settings how long it is kept, and switching it off entirely is an option.
• Your dictionary. Names and jargon Velo learns from you are stored locally. When you are signed in they sync to your own account so they work on your other Mac too.
• Your account. If you sign in: your email address and a session token. That token lives in the macOS Keychain, not in a config file.
• Usage counters. To enforce limits and to see whether the servers keep up, we count per account per day how many dictations were made and how many seconds they lasted. Those are numbers, not content: what you said and what came out is not part of it.
• Payment details. These never reach us. Card details go straight to the payment provider; we only see that a subscription is active and which email belongs to it.

Why, and on what legal basis

• To provide the service you asked for: performance of the contract.
• To enforce limits and prevent abuse: legitimate interest.
• To email you about your subscription, outages or important changes: performance of the contract.
• To meet tax record-keeping obligations: legal obligation.

There is no advertising, no profiling, no selling of data, and the website has no trackers or cookies.

Who else processes it

Velo runs on a few third-party services. Only these, and only for this:

• Groq (United States), for speech recognition and text cleanup. Receives your audio and the text from it, for the duration of processing.
• Supabase (servers in Frankfurt, EU), for your account and dictionary sync.
• Polar and its underlying payment processor, for payment and invoices.
• Vercel, for this website and the app's update check.
• GitHub, for app downloads and releases.
• Hugging Face, only when you download the local speech model in the app. Like any download server it sees your IP address; it never receives audio, text or account data. Dictation with that local model then happens entirely on your Mac, with no third-party processing at all.

Where data is transferred outside the European Economic Area, as with Groq, that happens under the European Commission's standard contractual clauses.

For how long

• Audio and dictation text: only during processing, then gone.
• History on your Mac: as long as you configure.
• Account, dictionary and usage counters: as long as your account exists. Cancel and ask for deletion, and everything is gone within thirty days.
• Invoices and payment records: seven years, as Dutch tax law requires.

Your rights

You can access, correct, delete or export your data, and object to processing. Email info@aaltun.nl and you will hear back within thirty days. If we cannot work it out, you can complain to the Dutch Data Protection Authority or the supervisory authority in your own country.

Security

Traffic is encrypted over https. Your session token lives in the macOS Keychain. Access to your dictionary is enforced per account at the database level, so another account cannot reach it. The app is signed and notarised by Apple, so you know what you install came from us.

Changes

If anything material changes about what we process, we update this page and email everyone with an account. The date at the top shows when this version took effect.
